5 Underrated Films

2/2/2015

Comments

Sometimes films aren't given the credit they deserve.  Here is a list of 5 out of many.

1. The Matrix Revolutions    General Critics Consensus:  A disappointing conclusion to the Matrix trilogy as characters and ideas take a back seat to the special effects.
My Consensus:  Though the finale isn't perfect, it has an interesting labyrinth of symbolic resonance, and action buffs should be able to get pretty excited.

2.  Underworld                       General Critics Consensus: Though stylish to look at, Underworld is tedious and derivative.
My Consensus: Meshing mythology, science fiction, and action turned out to work this time, with Kate Beckinsale delivering her all and then some.

3.  The Happening                   General Critics Consensus: The Happening begins with promise, but unfortunately descends into an incoherent and unconvincing trifle.
My Consensus:  Comedy and tragedy are perfectly balanced here, so the only convincing needed is the idea of why people thought this needed to be anything but what M. Night Shyamalan does best: catch the audience off guard while providing food for thought.

4. Saw III                                      General Critics Consensus: Saw III does little beyond repeating its predecessor's tropes on a gorier level.
My Consensus: Look beyond the gore, and what do you see?  A rich mythology coming to a strong head, but still managing to save its true gut punches for the film's end.

5.   Star Trek V: The Final Frontier      General Critics Consensus: Filled with dull action sequences and an underdeveloped storyline, this fifth Trek movie is probably the worst of the series.
My Consensus: This movie series has always been about abstract ideas and philosophy, so what is wrong with examining one of the biggest questions in the universe and leaving the audience images, time, and little pushes to ponder things on their own?
